Butterfields
Delivers By Helicopter The Largest Piece of Hard Candy in North
Carolina History
Today is a day
of anticipation as A Southern Season is expecting the largest
piece of Butterfields hard candy to arrive. The largest gourmet
store in the United States is here in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
It is a day for the suppliers of this Gourmet mecca to show
their appreciation and admiration.
Butterfields has
been around since 1924. This Nashville, North Carolina candy
maker makes hard candy in the most traditional way, still by
hand. Many hard candy makers have left the United States and
moved to places such as Canada, Mexico, and Argentina because
the price of sugar is twice the world market price. Butterfields
is still made here in the method that was used since the beginning.
Delivering the Peach
Bud was dramatic in its presentation as it was flown by helicopter
into the parking lot of University Mall. Brooks West, President
and Owner of Butterfields, delivered the eighty pound plus piece
of hard candy from the factory in an effort to “Celebrate
a North Carolina achievement.”
The hard candy
Peach Buds have won national awards which A Southern Season
mentioned in their catalogue. Twice finalists for the coveted
Outstanding Confection at the New York International Fancy Food
Show, the Peach Buds were noted for their outstanding excellence.
A humble hard candy stood apart from fine chocolate from Belgium
and Switzerland.
So what is a Peach
Bud? It is a hard candy that has been made for over 100 years.
A sugar outside, a hard candy layer, and a bit of coconut in
the center, give the impression that you are actually eating
a peach. West says, “We are in the business of illusion.
Taking a piece of crystallized sugar and matching the color,
flavor, and texture of a real peach.”
Butterfields makes
hard candy in 14 different flavors and sells to gourmet and
specialty stores throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
You will find Butterfields in stores like Dean & Deluca,
Neiman Marcus, Barsamians and most of the top gourmet stores
in the country.
West adds, “
We thought we should have some fun today and give a big thumbs
up to the people at A Southern Season who have achieved a great
thing by making our state a leader in the specialty food industry.
It is a great day to deliver perhaps the best hard candy in
the world.”
