Congressman
Shows Sweet Side; Visits Small Candy Company In Momeyer

NC — U. S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-NC) recently paid a visit
to one of his small business constituents. Butterfields Candy
Company played host to the Congressman, who was re-elected to
a fifth term November 2.
The
visit was highlighted by a plant tour, a get-acquainted session
with several employees and a discussion of the Sugar Price Support
System with J. Brooks West III, president of Sweet Concepts
Companies.
"This
is the kind of small business that keeps this country growing,"
said Etheridge. "They put people to work and impact the
marketplace with their commitment to delivering a high-quality
product."
"We're
happy to host the Congressman, and we appreciate his attention
to our views on the Sugar Price Support System," added
West. "It's always encouraging to know that people in Washington
are aware of our problems and willing to work toward solutions."
During
the visit, West conducted a tour of the facility that produces
Butterfields Buds, a line of fruit-flavored hard candies employing
methods and processes developed in 1924.
"If
we could find a way to make them better, we would. But, so far,
Mr. Butterfield's way seems best," West said. "It's
really helped us put Momeyer and Nashville on the map."
"We
have stores from Seattle to South Beach providing their customers
with the unique taste of our Buds," West continued.
Over
the past several years, Butterfields has twice been a finalist
in industry competitions for best confection.
And
they're not letting up.
"At
trade shows over the past year, we introduced a new retro line
called Old Fashioned Peach Buds in a box and tin, plus our first
chocolate product, bite-sized Peach Buds in a creamy white chocolate.
We also brought out Bursts, a new peppermint product in an 8
oz. pack and a new portable 1 oz. size. We're shipping these
products now and we're excited about the possibilities,"
West says.
